About

Before developing your climate action plan, take time to identify and record what your setting is already doing. You may be surprised by how much activity is already taking place - from encouraging active travel and meat-free menu days, to energy reduction and ongoing biodiversity projects.

Look at examples of climate action commonly taken in settings to help you recognise and build on the progress you’re already making.

Why

Starting from scratch can feel daunting, but mapping existing activities often shows that you have made more progress than you think.

This provides a clear, encouraging baseline for future climate action your setting could take.

How

Involve people from across your setting to build a broad picture of action already in progress - including senior leaders, educational staff, learners, governors or trustees, and colleagues responsible for estates, catering, and travel.

Practical ways to explore what’s already happening include:

  • Run a survey or audit to gather information
  • Speak with key people to capture their knowledge, experience and ideas
  • Include sustainability in group discussions - at staff, learner, governor or working group meetings
  • Review existing plans and policies for actions or activity related to sustainability and climate education
  • Look at available data such as energy use, waste, travel or catering data to identify existing activity and opportunities
