If you already have a sustainability lead, set up a working group to share responsibility for climate action.
Bringing together colleagues from across your setting combines different skills and perspectives, helps agree on clear actions, and builds shared accountability.
Why
A working group gives your sustainability lead practical support, builds continuity when staff changes, and helps embed sustainability into everyday decisions. Members can take ownership of areas that align with their role and expertise. For example:
- Business managers can help embed sustainability into budgets and identify funding opportunities for decarbonisation
- Operational staff can support biodiversity and the management of the estate
- Senior leaders can focus on climate resilience and maintaining optimal learning conditions
- Educational staff can support climate education and green skills
How
Involve both educational and operational staff who can influence different aspects of your setting’s work and help turn decisions into action.
- For individual settings: Smaller settings may only need two or three staff, while larger settings may involve people from different areas. Meet at least once a term to review progress, agree next steps and address any barriers
- For groups: A central sustainability or estates team can provide a shared approach, resources and opportunities to collaborate. This helps settings share ideas and coordinate action while allowing flexibility for local priorities and opportunities
