About
Share regular updates on your climate action with governors or trustees, including:
- successes and progress against your climate action plan
- challenges and risks
- priorities for future action
You can also use this as an opportunity to upskill and build their understanding of sustainability, climate risks and the importance of taking action. This helps develop long-term buy-in, and makes sure those responsible for governance understand the role they can play.
You could add this as an agenda item at a governors meeting that you return to regularly. Give them opportunities to provide feedback that you can use to improve your plans.
Why
Governors and trustees play an important role in supporting and providing oversight of your setting's climate action. Building their awareness and commitment can help secure the support and resources you need to put your plans into action, such as allocating sufficient time and capacity to sustainability responsibilities.
How
Start with the most relevant information, focusing on strategic progress, significant risks, decisions and areas where their support is needed.
Keep updates proportionate and focused - governors and trustees do not need to be involved in every operational detail, but they should have enough information to understand progress, oversee significant risks and support effective decision-making.
- Early Years: You might need to adapt this approach for your setting. Consider sharing updates with an owner, management committee or another body with strategic responsibility, rather than a traditional governing board
- Primary, Secondary and Further education: Your sustainability lead could coordinate updates on climate action, working with a senior leadership team and the governor or trustee responsible for sustainability, if there is one is in place
- Groups: Central teams may provide strategic information, targets and group-wide reporting, while local governing bodies can consider issues specific to their own setting and community
