Plan for climate change and emergencies
Cement your adaptation planning and create an emergency response plan. Make sure your parents, decision makers and community are informed and ready to carry out your plans.
Create a long term strategy that sets out the goals and delivery areas that will help your setting anticipate and address the challenges posed by climate change. It needs to outline your setting's adaptation objectives, processes and opportunities for enhancing your setting's climate resilience.
Get your parents involved in making your setting more resilient to climate events. This could be through meetings, parents evenings, regular communication routes or surveys.
Once you have completed your first climate risk assessment, it can be helpful to engage a specialist to help validate and build on it. They will offer expert guidance and to develop mitigation strategies specific to your setting’s context.
Develop a structured plan to pull together all activity related to helping make your setting more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Ideally, you have already developed a wider climate adaptation strategy - this plan should focus on delivery of the strategy.
Engage your senior leadership in your setting's climate adaptation plans. Share your plan to make your setting more resilient to climate hazards, with rationale to support why this is essential and worthwhile work.
Establish a process where climate adaptation is considered in any refurbishment or new build feature to your site. A good way to embed this into routine practice is to include it as an element of the business case of any proposed works.
As part of your wider climate risk assessment process and adaptation planning, it’s important to arrange climate event risk training for relevant staff members. This will ensure they are prepared to respond effectively to climate-related risks.
Develop a detailed plan for how to handle various different climate related emergencies, including extreme temperatures, weather, fires, drought or other unexpected events.
