About

The DfE requires all settings, including nurseries, schools and colleges, to appoint a sustainability lead, who can:

  • drive the setting’s climate action plan
  • coordinate activity across teaching, estates and community engagement
  • monitor progress
  • report on impact.

The role may have an alternative name, such as ‘eco champion’.

Why

A nominated sustainability lead provides a central point of coordination, helping embed sustainability across the setting. They don’t need to be an expert, with support available to build confidence and knowledge.

How

A sustainability lead can be one person or shared between two staff members. For maximum impact, they should have the authority to make changes, ideally through a senior leadership role or someone who is line-managed by senior leadership.

They should also have the time and budget to coordinate activity, engage colleagues and learners, and monitor progress towards sustainability goals.

Consider providing:

  • Sole leadership of sustainability, rather than adding it to an existing leadership role
  • Additional planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) or leadership time
  • Flexibility to attend sustainability CPD, events and networking opportunities
  • Teaching and learning responsibility (TLR), where budget allows
