Provide staff with opportunities to develop their knowledge, confidence and skills around sustainability and climate action. Start by assessing training needs through a brief CPD audit, then develop a flexible programme relevant to your setting.
This could include whole-staff awareness raising, sustainability sessions integrated into existing CPD, sustainability as part of staff induction, or more targeted training for staff with specific responsibilities.
Check what training is already available through your existing CPD programme, subscriptions or professional learning networks. You may already have access to training or resources on climate change, climate education or sustainability. For example, outdoor learning training could be extended to explore climate education and how staff can support wider climate action in your setting.

Building staff knowledge and confidence helps sustainability become part of everyday practice, rather than the responsibility of a few individuals.
Effective training helps staff understand the importance and urgency of climate action, identify how their role can contribute, and build confidence to support learners.
It also equips leaders, finance leads, and site staff with the technical expertise needed to make informed operational decisions.
How
All staff should have opportunities to develop their understanding of sustainability, with training tailored to different roles and levels of responsibility.
Sustainability leads can coordinate a CPD programme with senior leaders and those responsible for staff development and induction. Consider more targeted or specialist training for key decision-makers, sustainability leads and staff with responsibilities relating to areas such as estates, energy, catering, procurement or climate-related risks.
New staff should also have opportunities to develop their sustainability knowledge as part of their induction.
