Embed sustainability into your vision and values

About

Look for ways to connect sustainability with your setting's existing values, ethos and vision.

Whatever your vision or motto may be, there is often a natural connection with sustainability, such as responsibility, respect, care, community, stewardship, fairness or preparing learners for the future.

Where there is strong local support, you could also consider adding or making sustainability more explicitly visible within your values or vision.

Sustainability can also be linked to character education and the development of knowledge, skills and attributes of your learners. This could include responsibility, empathy, resilience, curiosity, critical thinking and taking action.

Why

Embedding sustainability within your setting's values can help make it part of your identity and culture, rather than treating it as a separate initiative. Over time, it can help build whole-setting awareness and create a culture in which sustainable choices and climate action are recognised as part of everyday decision-making.

How

This will involve your senior leadership team, in consultation with your whole school body and community.

  • Faith groups: Many faiths already reference sustainability, including principles relating to stewardship, care for creation, responsibility, justice, community and concern for future generations. Be sure to connect these with your sustainability work
  • Early Years settings: Make the links practical and visible rather than relying on abstract ideas about sustainability. Your young children will likely already explore ideas connected to care, respect, responsibility and looking after the world through play, stories, outdoor learning and daily routines
